Outstanding Computer February 7, 2010 Computer Wiz (Virginia, USA) My old computer got screwed up with a ton of viruses and i had to get a new one. before this, i was dealing with windows XP, 160GB of hard drive, 512MB of ram, a 7 minute start up time, 6 USB ports, and a GIANT desktop. when i got this, my mind just blew away. this computer is great! it takes like 30 seconds to start up, which is amazing. it is very tiny, so you don't have to be conservative for space. Windows 7 is completely outstanding. I have never seen a better operating system than that. with 750GB of storage, you are set for life. 9 USB ports and a card reader is amazing. now i can plug in my wireless reciever, my ipod, my flash drive, my printer, my keyboard, my mouse, and still have 3 USB ports left. Anyone who is even looking at this computer right now online should consider buying it. It saved my life.
Impressive power in a tiny package January 31, 2010 Barbi (Ramsey, NJ USA) I purchased the Acer AX1800-U9002 Desktop PC with some amount of trepidation. Although its specs impressed me (Intel Core 2 Quad 2.5GHz processor, 750GB hardrive, Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit), the price seemed too good to be true. When it arrived and I saw how tiny the case is, my anxiety level increased. However, after using it for my home business for about a month now, I can safely say that the Acer has met and exceeded my every expectation. Having previously used Windows XP, Windows 7 has given me pause more than once, but I've usually been able to adapt. Windows 7 seems to have compatibility issues (i.e., remotely accessing a client's email); so far I have been able to get around this by using my old PC, but it sure would be great if I didn't have to resort to that. What I like most is the quick responsiveness of the Acer. It takes literally no time for the computer to execute my every command, plus it has no problem multi-tasking. As to its size, it's quite small. It sits on my desk (rather than on the floor like my much, much larger previous PC). Due to its size, the Acer has a vertical CD/DVD tray. I haven't had any problem inserting or removing CDs, so the vertical position of the tray doesn't bother me. It has lots of USB ports in the front - another big plus - and it's extremely quiet. I primarily run MS Office, Quicken and QuickBooks on the Acer, so I can't speak to how it would perform under other circumstances. Overall, I'm very pleased and would definitely recommend the Acer.
very good, but a few problems so far January 23, 2010 Matthew M. Wilbert (Boxborough, MA, USA) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I am very happy with this PC, but you need to know that I don't use this PC for anything with challenging video requirements, so check some other review for that information.
Pros:
It was very easy to set up.
It runs quite fast. It multitasks very nicely; I don't see noticeable slowdowns in my work when I am scanning documents or when antivirus is busy.
It comes with Windows 7 64-bit, which I like pretty well, although there a couple of weird bugs. The 4GB of RAM seems like enough.
Lots of USB ports, eSATA port, HDMI port (although I'm currently using the VGA port because I have a VGA KVM
switch).
Disk seems to be fast (750GB 7200RPM SATA). It is shipped with two partitions each taking up about half the disk, with the D: partition empty. This arrangement suited me.
It is quite compact. This is one of the reasons I bought it--I have limited space around my desk and this PC is quite small.
So-so:
It is reasonably quiet, but you know it is on; there is a fair bit of fan noise.
I had to update my display adapter driver to stop it from doing weird things (changing screen resolution for no reason, hanging).
Cons:
The construction of the PC could be more solid--the front panel doors are quite insubstantial and feel like they could easily break off. The power switch is also kind of wiggly, although on my PC it works perfectly.
Limited internal expansion--trade off for the small size. I don't expect to need the expansion, so I didn't care.
No built-in wireless.
4GB of RAM is the maximum supported.
Windows 7 isn't perfect. Sometimes it hangs on shutdown. Sometime Windows Explorer stops refreshing folder displays properly. I've had the shutdown problem on XP PCs, but the refreshing problem is new to me.
Opps, no cigar. December 16, 2009 Doctor Swann (Midwest - USA) 1 out of 4 found this review helpful
the system has THE funkiest power switch.
The switch feels like the squishiest membrain style button. Almost no positive feed back. I worked on the PC yesterday and it seemed ok. Now the Power switch turns on the PC only 5% of the time. I have had to press down on the switch and hold it for 60 seconds, then the pc magically turns on. Other times that trick won't work. I'm about to give up. I have seen these power switch problems with ACER before. I don't know why I continue to try. Fool me 3 times, I'm a big dummy.
IF THE PC TURNS ON, it probably is an ok box. However, I just noticed that the expansion slots are the weird 1/2 height slots which can be hard to find cards to fill.
This box was made in September of 2009, and yet Acer doesn't even list the product on its website. there is a download page on the support area, but it wasn't easy to find.
I've had too many problems with Acer Flat panel monitors and PCs. The laptop screens are too dark, and the product line is below average. Acer should make their stuff in a better place.
ACER STOPPED DOING QUALITY CONTROL YEARS AGO.
A decent desktop December 11, 2009 Fred Chen (Westwood, NJ United States) 3 out of 3 found this review helpful
I've got this desktop for almost 2 weeks. No problem so far. I bought this system to replace my 3-year old laptop and it turns out to be a good decision. Personally, I am not a big fan of a slimline pc. It's because that we may be moving in near future, a smaller one is preferred at this time.
Pros:
1. Very quite. The only two fans are for the CPU and power supply, and both are quite.
2. Very fast and multi-tasking. I feel this is a huge jump from my old laptop with windows xp. It is very fast on both starting up and shutting down. Opening a second application is just like opening the first one.
3. Small and light-weighted. I don't feel it occupying a space when it's on the table. The system (without keyboard and mouse) is about 10.4 lb.
4. The price. Q8300 plus windows 7 home. Bang for the buck. Shipping and processing was fast from J&R.
Cons:
1. The graphic. It has an onboard nVidia GeForece 7100 chipset. I'd say this is adequate for web surfing, video clips and watching DVDs. But this is not designed for heavy gaming. Windows experience index has it graphics at 3.9 and gaming graphics at 3.3.
2. Future expansion. There are PCI express x16 and x1 slots on the higher end of the motherboard. If you want to add a video card by using the PCIe x 16, the case can only accept a low-profile card. Since the PCIe x16 slot is the highest and not much space left, heat dissipation might not be very well.
3. No speakers. Since we already have a 2.1 stereo system, this is not a problem for us. But my wife was surprised that there was no speakers in the box.
I am not a high-tech person and so far I am satisfied with this desktop. 4GB DDR2 800 ram may sound a bit small, but the fact is that I've never used more than 40% of them.
