1 out of 5 stars Failed within 9 months of first use   September 1, 2010
Jeffrey Few (Seattle, WA USA)
I've owned dozens of hard drives over the years, and this was the quickest time to failure of any of them: three days shy of 9 months!

Fortunately, it's still under warranty, but how can I trust the replacement?

5 out of 5 stars Great Drives   May 10, 2010
D. Caldwell
Have been running a pair of these for a month or so in a RAID 1 (Linux software RAID, by the way). They have worked very well and my read/write speeds to the RAID have been very good. As usual with hard drives, I only get a 903GB partition when formatted. Would definitely buy these again.

4 out of 5 stars Good Hard Drive   May 9, 2010
Richard J. Schauwecker
Bought this 1 month ago. I installed the drive as a second hard drive in my desktop computer.
Installation was simple. I already had a spare SATA cable and spare power cable adapter. You will need these as they do not come with this "bare" drive.

The packaging by Amazon was terrible. A rather large cardboard box with the bare drive inside only protected from movement by 3 inflatable bubble bags. Not nearly enough protection. I'm sure the drive was thrown around inside the box during the delivery process. I was wondering if the drive was damaged but it worked fine. So, I guess this is a plus for the drive's toughness. Delivery took about a week.

It is quiet. I can barely hear it operating. My other drive is louder, and it is not overly loud either.
I purchased this drive, mostly, because of it's supposed durability. Time will tell.
The drive runs about 5 degrees C cooler than my 350G primary drive.
Transfer rates for my music and video collection from the 350G drive to this drive seemed fast enough.

This is a 1T drive but about 100G of this drive is unusable to me. So, you only have 900G capacity. I guess this is some type of Windows thing, but I have not tried to figure out if I can recover some of this 100G unusable space. 10% seems like a lot for this capacity size of drive.

I'll buy another for my backup computer when I need the capacity.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Choice to upgrade your iMac   March 30, 2010

I bought this to replace my original iMac hard-drive. This is not only much larger in capacity than my original iMac hard-drive (original was 350 GB in size) but also much faster. I got it installed at BestBuy for $40. This was one of the best upgrade choices I have made in a long time. Even better than the memory bump i gave my iMac from 2GB to 4 GB after buying "crucial" memory on amazon. I think the performance bump is higher in the hard-drive upgrade case.
Hope this helps!!
Prashant

5 out of 5 stars Works for TiVo HD after a simple tweak   March 26, 2010
G. Wiles (Texas)
Paul's review inspired me to try using this drive for my TiVo HD. The wdidle3.exe program worked perfectly and I am now enjoying lots "free" TV. Drive is nearly as quiet as the original drive and is a whole lot quieter than the ATT U-Verse box I got rid of.
